Sun King - A Tribute to the Cult brings the mystical rock music of the Cult to the masses.
The Cult burst onto the alternative music scene in England in 1984 with their first breakout hit "Spiritwalker". In 1985 the band saw continued success overseas and in the UK among gothic, alternative and new wave fans and hit the charts with danceable hits like "Rain" and "She Sells Sanctuary". However, it was in 1987 when the Cult cam to the US to record with legendary producer Rick Rubin, that they found their enduring voice as a true rock band. That album, spawned rock classics like Love Removal Machine and set the tone for the hard driving, rhythmic rock that would define the band for years to come.
Interestingly, the Cult have continued to retain fans from both their early alternative days and later hard rock era albums and a typical Cult concert will see new wave fans of bands like the Cure dancing side by side with fans of Guns 'n Roses (both bands having toured with the Cult). It is this ability to cross genres that has given the Cult a well, cult following for over twenty years.
Differences between primary band members Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy have made Cult albums and tours sporadic and unpredictable. Fortunately, Cult fans have another option. Sun King - A Tribute to the Cult faithfully reproduces classic Cult songs and live show playing both mainstream commercial radio hits as well as live fan favorites. The band was formed in early 2008 by fans of the Cult intending to be the ultimate opening tribute act that could fit well with fans of gothic, alternative, new wave, hard rock or heavy metal. However, the high energy show became even more popular and Sun King quickly became a headlining act in several of San Diego's largest venues.
